Old Fourth Ward
Fulton County | 30312, 30308, 30312
Centrally located amongst intown neighborhoods, Old Fourth Ward is a historic community best known as the birthplace of Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., whose home and neighboring properties still stand and have been preserved as a historic site. The King Center calls Old Fourth Ward home and provides an essential resource to enlighten future generations about the Civil Rights Movement.
Earning its name from when Atlanta was broken up into five wards, Old Fourth Ward is the only community which was able to hold onto its original name. Accessible to Inman Park, the Edgewood Commercial District, historic Sweet Auburn, and just a short drive away from Georgia State University, Grant Park, Cabbagetown, and Freedom Parkway, this centrally-located community is one of the city’s biggest neighborhoods. Here you’ll find a mix of historic bungalows and innovative modern homes. The BeltLine trail unites residents of the Old Fourth Ward with a number of excellent restaurants, retail, and adjacent communities.
On the southern edge, Ponce City Market represents one of Atlanta’s premiere mixed-use projects. First built on the site of Ponce de Leon Springs and later Ponce de Leon amusement park, for much of recent history this massive building sat mostly empty. For many years it was a Sears catalogue facility, conveniently situated alongside train tracks that facilitated transportation of goods in and out of town. Those tracks are now the Atlanta BeltLine, connecting this area to Piedmont Park and nearby neighborhoods. Across the street, what is now the Midtown Place development anchored by Whole Foods and Home Depot was once the home of the Atlanta Crackers, a local baseball team.
In recent years, Jamestown purchased and completely renovated this massive structure. Today it is one of the most popular destinations for locals and visitors alike. High-end retailers such as Anthropologie, West Elm, and Citizen Supply draw shoppers while the vibrant and bustling food hall boasts a variety of food concepts. On the roof, Skyline Park is a unique carnival-style concept with putt-putt course, carnival games, snack food, bar, and even a sit-down restaurant, all featuring incredible skyline views.
